Could Christopher Marlowe really be William Shakespeare? That question has been debated by countless philosophers, writers, and historians for many years. It is indeed very possible that Christopher Marlowe could have been Shakespeare. First of all, it is believed that Christopher Marlowe faked his own death. Word got around that there was going to be an arrest from the Queen’s Privy Council for Marlowe. Just before the council got to arrest Marlowe he was supposedly killed in a bar fight. All of the people who were with Marlowe at the bar fight were not convicted of murder and were let off without any penalties. What leads many people to believe that he faked his death, was the shady people with him and the timing of his death. The people with him included; a con artist and moneylender, a spy/courier for the Queen’s Secret Service, and another spy. These people were all capable of faking a death in order to let someone live. If Marlowe did fake his death then he would have had plenty of time to write Shakespeare’s plays as well as his own while he was “laying low” and trying not to be seen. It would also make sense to why he used a pen name for his writings. Next, Shakespeare and Marlowe had very similar childhoods. They were born within two months of each other and were both believed to have attended grammer schools. Also, they both became Elizabethan play writers in their young adult years. In addition, there is believed that there are many anagrams in Marlowe’s plays, as well as, Shakespeare’s plays describing Marlowe’s young years and where he was hiding after his death. Finally, there are many similarities in Marlowe’s and Shakespeare’s writing styles and themes. Both Marlowe and Shakespeare seemed to have the same rate, pace of tempo, and same vocabulary. Also, many of the themes of Shakespeare’s and Marlowe’s plays included power and corruption. Also Shakespeare’s first appearance as an actor was in December, 1594. Marlowe was “killed” in May, 1593. So Shakespeare’s first appearance was over a year after Marlowe was allegedly murdered. It is indeed very possible that Christopher Marlowe could have been William Shakespeare. There is a lot of evidence that leads many people to believe that Marlowe was Shakespeare. Marlowe faking his death, Shakespeare and Marlowe having very similar childhoods, and the similarities in writing styles and themes all point to William Shakespeare being Christopher Marlowe.
Positive 2:
Christopher Marlowe could have quite possibly written Shakespeare's poems and plays. There is barely any information on Shakespeare's life and even less information on his young life. This shows that Marlow, after faking his own death, could have a changed his identity to a William Shakespeare so he could continue his works in writing. They were also born in the same year, showing that they were the same age, and this shows that they could easily be the same person.
Negative 1:
With all the mysteries and multiple truths to Shakespeare’s plays, it is obvious that Christopher Marlowe did not write any of them. Marlowe was with the English Secret Service. However, he also wrote many plays. He was known by many to be a “loudmouth” and “untrustworthy”. This states that he could not have held something as important as writing Shakespeare’s plays.
He had many connections to people in the underworld. Some of these people included Nicholas Skeres, a common street thug, Ingram Frizer, a black mailer, and Tobin Poley, an agent provocateur. They all were people with shady backgrounds, and most of them could not be trusted.
Marlowe was also a writer despite his work in the field of espionage. He wrote many plays that some believe resemble William Shakespeare’s, which is impossible. It is said that in some of his plays, that he offended people. He also died before he could have written Shakespeare’s plays.
He died in a barroom fight. He was with Frizer, Skeres, and Poley. They had just finished their drinks when a fight broke out over the bill. Frizer allegedly stabbed Marlowe in the forehead. However, considering that Marlowe was a loudmouth, he also made enemies making pro-catholic statements. This could be a likely reason someone would have ordered a “hit” on him. This proves that he was not around to make the rest of Shakespeare’s plays.
Negative 2:Marlowe was killed in a bar fight in 1593
